Abstract

THE LAST WOOD-TURNING MASTER LIVING IN AMASRA: ALI RIZA VATANDASLAR
Among the wooden handcrafts, wood carving, which constitutes an important part of traditional Turkish handicrafts, offers rich diversity in terms of our history. The performance of this handcraft, which has evolved from carving to turning, has reached the present day through work-shadowing from the master to the apprentice, with the traces of the old and traditional elements. Ali Riza Vatandaslar, who practices wood turning in Amasra district of Bartin, has been practicing this profession for nearly 50 years. Even though he transferred his traditional knowledge and experience to his apprentices in time, his apprentices did not continue practicing this profession. Ali Riza Vatandaslar is the last representative of this traditional profession in the centre of Amasra district. He both continues his profession and exhibits the products made by him in his small shop located in the Cekiciler Market in Amasra. In this paper, the art of wood turning master, Ali Riza Vatandaslar living in Amasra is tried to be evaluated within the context of traditional profession, and it is aimed to examine and document his art before it becomes extinct.
