Abstract


ANIMAL MOTIFS IN OTTOMAN FABRIC ART

When accessible sources is examined some animal motifs are used in many cultures. It is seen that the animal motifs are stylized. This is related to various religious beliefs and it is suggested that it was born as a necessity of properly developing life style, geographical conditions. Since the ancient times there has been different information to be found about the form, color, technique and symbolic meaning of this stylisation. For example Yaşar Çoruhlu mentions that the animal style is an art style which is execution of members of the Turkish community and Turkish origin. He indicates that this style especially will be brought up the steppe culture in BC 3000 years when the tribe began to occur. In the Ottoman Era there wasn't encountered animal style in the fabric art. Animal figures are rarely in the decorative arts. Some of them (leopard-spots, such as the leopard line) are isolated and minimized from animal motifs. Until the XV th century animal figures should be used in architecture as well as other arts and know if it is treated to the smallest detail, few have had access to our documentof this period. One of this documents of fabric which consisting of leopard spots and leopard lines, belongs to the second of the XV th century and attributed to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet. In this study, development and change processes of animal patterns will be examined in the Ottoman fabric art. Located animal motifs of the Ottoman fabric art will be compared with animal motifs used in other branches of art. Motifs will be handled symbolic meaning, form, layout ,interaction with other motifs and will be discussed by differences.
