Abstract

EVERYDAY FOODIES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF FOOD SOCIOLOGY: THE CASE OF BATMAN

The study has aimed to catch clues about social change by following the footsteps of food sociology. Thus, based on the changes in the kitchen, it is aimed to present a sociological photograph based on food. With this motivation, the Batman people, who feel limited but who have interest, knowledge and anxiety about food, and who live as a kind of ‘everyday foodies’ even if they are not professional, are examined. In this regard, in-depth interviews were conducted with people living in Batman, an ideal study area for research, with the opportunities provided by the qualitative research method. Based on the findings, it was understood that the interviewers saw the meal as a social decleration. Religious belief determines the eating-drinking behavior. Food media affect participants' behaviors, tastes and preferences. The so-called 'everyday foodies’ interviewed in the study have a certain level of income that causes gourmet concerns. With these financial possibilities, the participants naturally go to a spatial distinction. The subject of reliable food is one of the common precision of the interviewees. In addition, participants are concerned with new global identities built through food. Depending on the social dynamic, the borders of the kitchen are being redrawn.
