Abstract

SAINT JOSEPH ICONOGRAPHY IN CHRISTIAN DEPICTION ART

Joseph, mentioned in the Canonical Bibles, is the husband of Virgin Mary and the earthly father of Jesus. He is cited in the New Testament, especially in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke in relation to the life of Jesus. Joseph is also spoken of in apocratic texts besides the Canonical Bibles. Therefore, in the Christian depiction art, artists created their works by interpreting these texts and inspired by them. In this study, the place of Saint Joseph in the Christian depiction art will be discussed with references to written sources and a Saint Joseph iconography will be revealed in the context of Western art through a number of examples of paintings from early Renaissance, late Renaissance and Baroque styles that make reference to Saint Joseph.
