Abstract

A VIEW TO THE HISTORY OF A MULTICULTURAL IMAGE: THE SAINT WHO IS RIDING A LION

A wellknown legend among the some parts of the Cypriot christianity has described a holy man who rides a lion, with a lamb in his arms. Riding lion is not an uniqe image which have been used only by the Chrisians of Cyprus. From Portugal to Tibet and from Hitits to contemporary days, almost all of the cultures and religions used to described the same image when thay have described thier own “holy” men. The difference between the descriptions is concern with the animal which he keeps in his hands. According to the legends from the western part of the world, holy man has a lamb in his hands. For the eastern variations of the same legend, he used to take a  snake in his hands. It seems that the source of the image is from a same cultural root. With this article we have tried to explain the history and the source of that intercultural image which it has emaneted, from the Neolitic ages to contemperary times.
