Abstract


THE IMPACT OF THE LANGUAGE SKILLS OF SYRIAN IMMIGRANT CHILDREN AND THEIR RELATIONS WITH THE SCHOOL ON THEIR ADAPTATION TO THE EDUCATION SYSTEM AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK

In the historical process from past to present, people migrate to other settlements from where they live due to reasons such as social conflicts, genocide, disease, poverty, famine, and more economic income. The demographic displacement of many people, whose number is millions, causes important changes not only on the individual level but also on the social level due to its effects. It is known that the history of the phenomenon of migration has a history as old as human history, and it is thought that it will continue especially rapidly with globalization. It is known that, of course, children will be affected the most and their education will be interrupted. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of the language problems Syrian immigrant children experience and their relationship with the school on their adaptation to the education system. Qualitative research method was used in the research. The study group of the research consists of 15 Syrian parents and 16 teachers / administrators in primary schools, where there are mixed education in public schools under the Ministry of Education in Istanbul. Semi-structured interview technique was used in the research. Content analysis technique was used to analyze the data. As a result of the research, it was determined that the fact that Syrian parents and students did not know Turkish constitute an obstacle in front of their communication and adaptation to the school, and the behavior of the school environment towards immigrant children affects their teachers.
