Abstract


BEING A HEARING-IMPAIRED WOMAN

Disability can be defined as a result of some combinations that restrict physical, cognitive, mental, sensory, emotional, developmental or individual's ability to participate in what is considered "normal" in daily life. According to the World Health Organization; Disability is a human rights issue. Because individuals with disabilities; due to their disability, they cannot provide equal access to health services, employment, education or political participation. People with disabilities are subject to violations of dignity, violence, harassment, prejudice or disrespect because of their disability. In addition, women with disabilities; It is more vulnerable than disabled men and the elderly. In the studies conducted, women with disabilities; It is known that women who have no disability in terms of breast and cervical cancer have a lower rate of screening services, besides, it is observed that they have problems in the field of reproductive health, sexual health, and do not have sufficient access to health services. Hearing impaired women are similar to other women with disabilities; they have women's health problems, cannot participate in screening programs and also have difficulties in accessing other health services. According to women with different disabilities, hearing-impaired women additionally experience communication problems, are exposed to violence and have difficulty in dealing with violence, and have difficulties reporting their violence. Also; Lack of education and inadequate employment are among the problems experienced by hearing impaired women. As a result; Healthcare professionals providing services to these women who have problems in obtaining health services due to their communication problems, whose health problems are not understood or misunderstood should review their care, monitoring and training activities. Women health nurses should organize patient care, follow-up and patient education by taking into consideration the needs of women with hearing disabilities in terms of reproductive health and sexual health. Sign language training should be expanded among healthcare professionals, and staff who know sign language should be given consultancy services in health institutions.
