Abstract

PEOPLE'S HOUSES AS A TOOL FOR CREATING A NEW WESTERN SOCIETY

People's Houses were born as a reflection of the desire of the revolutions realized within the framework of six arrows to be established in a short way and with a totaliter management approach. People's Houses are also an image refreshing activity; the administration fell out of favour due to the narrowing of freedoms and the economic difficulties reaching the highest level. The social engineering initiatives implemented in Europe and Communist Russia at that time also inspired the establishment of People's Houses. In addition, the elitist approach towards raising awareness and transforming the people, which remained from the Young Turks and seen as an unconscious mass, was another reason that gave birth to People's Houses. “Türk Ocakları”, which were established and operated with the desire to create a national consciousness in line with the Western civilization, also created the infrastructure for People's Houses. The People's Houses, which were opened as People's Houses in cities and as People's Rooms in large villages, acted as the party state's means of transforming society. People's Houses tried to build a new society from art to sports, from literature to history. The People's Houses, which entered into a meaning crisis with the end of the Second World War and the transition to multi-party life, were closed. People's Houses have could not fulfill their targeted mission during the establishment phase. However, it has also left some effects on the society both in the period of its activity and in the following period. This study aims to reveal the positive and negative effects of People's Houses on the society within the framework of its purpose, foundation and activities. The study has been handled with a descriptive method based on literature review.
