Abstract


BIOGRAPHY OF ALI AL-AMIN MAZRUI AND HIS ACTIVITIES

Professor Ali Al-Amin Mazrui (Ali Mazrui) was born in the year 1933 in Mombasa, Kenya. He is one of the descendants of the Mazrui family which came to the East Coast of Africa in the 17th Century. It is known that approximately 25 people from this family, including Ali Mazrui himself, apparently appears to be in the list of the world scholars. The scholar, who entirely spent most of his career and education life abroad was educated in the United Kingdom (UK) and United State of America (USA). After completing his doctorate in the year 1966, he worked as an academician at Makerere University, one of the most prestigious universities in East Africa and Uganda specifically at that time. Ali Mazrui left Makerere University in the year 1973 due to the military coup that happened in Uganda and settled in America. Where he continued with his academic career till his death in the year 2014. In his lifetime, Ali Mazrui, emerged to be one of the East Africa’s most influential political scientists who made major contribution to African politics, Islamic history, and analysis of Swahili and Arab poems among other scholarly work. Mazrui not only excelled in his academic work but also lived his life to inspire others by documenting his life journeys through his annual newsletter where he described his world in an enticing and witty manner. While studying the life of Ali Mazrui, we relied mostly on the already available materials on his biography and information’s Ali Mazrui himself shared in his yearly Newsletters. His annual newsletters were essential in providing first-hand information on his personal life from the year 1979 to 2010. In our study we will make significant reference to his 33 newsletters and obtain information on his life from his perspective.
