Emine Sevgi Özdamar is a writer of Turkish origin who immigrated to Germany in the 1960s and wrote her works in German. Özdamar's works are generally discussed within the framework of Immigrant Literature in Germany. However, when examined in terms of content, it can be seen that these works are more suitable for Intercultural Literature. Although Emine Sevgi Özdamar's immigration to Germany and the writing process of her works coincide with the movement called 'Immigrant Literature' or 'Guest Worker Literature', Özdamar's style of writing her works and the subjects she deals with differ significantly from that literature. The works written in the first years of migration by the first generation were mostly written in Turkish. The topics the writers of this period dealt with in their works were especially the problems brought with migration. In this context, the cultural shock that emerged as a result of the encounter of different cultures, the process of adaptation to the new environment and the difficulties experienced in this process were the main topics. The industrial environment and its difficulties, which had never been seen before by people who came from Anatolia and were engaged in farming, were the other prominent themes. However, one of the most important problems of this period were the language problems caused by the ignorance of the immigrated place’s language. In the late 1980s, Özdamar started to write his literary works in German. The main issues of these works, that coincide with the second period of immigrant literature, aren’t the immigrants’ problems. In Özdamar's autobiographical works, it is seen that Turkish culture is explained in German using the verbatim translation technique. In this context, Özdamar's target audience consists of Germans or German speaking people. This article will focus on the reflections of Turkish culture in the language that is a part of the culture in Sevgi Özdamar's first work ‘Mother Tongue ‘.
