Abstract

REPRESENTATION OF THE NEUROTIC CHARACTER AND ANALYSIS OF THE DISTORTED SOCIALIZATION IN THE MOVIE THE MILKY WAY (1967)
This study deals with the movie The Milky Way (1967) starring Hülya Koçyiğit and Ediz Hun in terms of the representation of the neurotic character and his distorted socialization. The flawed social harmony of the alienated character, whose mother dies at a very young age, is due to his suffering from the loss of his parents, to his mother’s death and father's marriage to someone else. Using the terminologies of Freud, Adler and Horney, this article aims to analyze the neurotic character in terms of unfulfilled desire, sense of belonging and distorted development of the self. The character with a traumatic childhood has difficulty in socializing and developing an integrated self. His isolation from society (and humiliation by the other) shapes his style of life and, as Adler suggests, causes him social troubles. The neurotic character raised by his aunt and falls in love with his cousin quits education and, thus develops an aggressive, melancholic and asocial profile in society. In fact, he is unable to manage his feelings of inability and inferiority. His unrequited love furthermore reinforces his complex to make him develop a melancholic self. The study shows how the neurotic character eventually has transferred his libidinal energy to the arts and achieves self-respect through art.
